The journalist for Scroll Aishwarya Iyer and the journalist for The Wire Ismat Ara won the Human Rights and Religious Freedom (HRRF) Young Journalist of the Year Award on June 19. The awards were a part of the annual Human Rights and Religious Freedom Journalism Awards that were announced by the advocacy group Indian American Muslim Council.
Who Is Aishwarya Iyer?
Aishwarya Iyer is a journalist who specialises in doing ground reports and investigations into topics regarding minorities and gender.
Iyer won the Human Rights and Religious Freedom Young Journalist Award 2022 along with Ismat Ara, a journalist for The Wire.
The advocacy group Indian American Muslim Council announced that the winners were awarded for their detailed reporting on the persecution of Muslims during the COVID-19 pandemic, anti-conversion laws, and the human rights violations in Kashmir.
President of the Indian American Muslim Council Syed Ali said, “We constituted these awards to highlight stories and amplify voices that are often missing from the mainstream/elite media.”
Aishwarya Iyer received her Bachelor’s degree in Hindu College, Delhi University. She got her post-graduate diploma in Broadcast Journalism from the Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media (IIJNM).
Iyer’s journalism career began in 2015 when she became a sub-editor for the Hindustan Times. She proceeded to work as a reporter and researcher at NDTV. During her time at NDTV, she worked on the documentary show Truth Vs Hype.
Iyer worked as a reporter and researcher for the weekly current affairs show. Iyer then worked at The Quint for four years as a reporter. She specialised in covering violence against minorities through ground reports and investigations. She also covered topics such as gender, caste, and labour through her reporting.
She began working at Scroll in November 2021 and is currently a senior reporter at the agency.
Iyer has written about the bulldozing of the houses of Muslim protestors, hate crimes, and the plight of riot survivors.
